WORKPLACE RISK FACTORS
(source: University of Utah - ErgoWeb)
Certain characteristics of the work setting have been associated with injury. These characteristics are called risk factors and include those listed below.

Task Physical Characteristics (involving interaction between worker and work setting):

  • Posture (position of body during work)
  • Force (effect of exertion on internal body parts)
  • Velocity/acceleration (speed of body part)
  • Task Repetition (high repetition = higher risk)
  • Duration (time exposed to risk factor)
  • Recovery Time (time of rest for vulnerable area)
  • Heavy Dynamic Exertion (cardiovascular fatigue)
  • Segmental Vibration (hand-arm vibration)
Environmental Characteristics (involving interaction between worker and environment):
  • Heat Stress (heat load that body must accommodate)
  • Cold Stress (exposure to cold, lowering core body temperature)
  • Whole Body Vibration (exposure to long-term riding/driving)
  • Lighting (incorrect background/task lighting and glare)
  • Noise (exposure to hazardous sound)
Other Major Workplace Risk Factors (common industrial hazards):
  • Job Stress
  • Job Invariability
  • Cognitive Demands
  • Work Organization
  • Workload
  • Working Hours (shift work/overtime)
  • Displays and Control Panels
  • Slips and Falls
  • Fire
  • Electrical Exposures
  • Chemical Exposures
  • Biological Exposures
  • Radiation Exposures
